Throw a bag of rock salt in the trunk of you car to melt ice and a bag of sand to improve traction if you get stuck in the snow. The weight of the sand and rock salt also helps improve traction in rear wheel / AWD vehicles. Consider a snow shovel to dig yourself out and blankets to keep you or your passengers warm. A ice scraper and a snow brush will always come in handy.
Purchase or make up your own emergency road kit which may include items such as a distress flag, a battery powered or hand cranked radio / flashlight, road safety flares, tool kit, tow rope, battery booster / jumper cables, cell phone, etc.
